about

“Polar Bear” is a song about how capitalism, white supremacy and patriarchy are destroying Mother Earth.

While making Bitchcraft, I was listening to Laurie Anderson’s Homeland, and knew I had to reach out to Roma Baran, who co-produced that album with Anderson and Lou Reed. She ended up producing the strings on the original version of “Polar Bear.”

She got me to approach my violin completely differently, to where they became a whole layer of insects, the buzz of our ecosystem that is quickly disappearing. Getting her input brought a whole new layer to the song– the instruments became the natural world I was singing about.

When it came time to think about remixes, I knew Roma would bring something unique and powerful to the song. I gave her full permission to do whatever she wanted with it, and I love the result!

lyrics

Sometimes it feels like
We’re in the horrible of America
Concrete awful, corporate tax breaks
Made to take all the beauty from this world

Pave over our parks,
Drill out out our hearts
Hit the gas on climate change
Laugh while you do it

Tax the poor
Profit more
Give the reins to kkk
And brag while you do it

Cause Mother Nature
All her creatures
Made in perfect form
To weather the most unimaginable storm

I can hear the howl of the polar bear
I know she’s scared
I can hear the howl of the polar bear
I know she’s scared

Sometimes the only comfort I can find
Is to know we’ll all just go extinct
So all the animals, all the plant life
Will come back after we are long gone

With all our idiocies, all our pesticides
All our chemicals that choke out our insides
All our GMOs, our factory tanks
Our screaming machines that drown our streams
With nuclear plants

Will fall so Mother Nature
And all her creatures
Will restore themselves then
She will lick her wounds and make again

I can hear the howl of the polar bear
I know she’s scared
I can hear the howl of the polar bear
I know she’s scared

Bitch Los Angeles, California

The longstanding queer music icon Bitch makes witchy poet pop. She does it with violins and synthesizers, and the songs she writes are spectral, heartbreaking, political, and beautiful. "Bitchcraft" is like Joni Mitchell set to a click track, it’s queer Cyndi Lauper. It’s neon pink, in your face, ready to hex you with its brilliance. ... more
